Rachel and Bill Clarke have a long pedigree in the dairy
industry. On all sides of the family parents, grandparents and
great grandparents had a herd of milking cows and until
recently so did the Clarkes.
However times change and to cope with the increasing
demands of health & hygiene regulations and
ever-decreasing amount of space, Bill and Rachel recently
stopped producing and now concentrate solely on processing
(making milk, butter, yoghurt and other dairy products).
Trewithen supplies milk for Kelly's ice cream and to
Waitrose at Saltash as well as many shops across Cornwall.
They work with four other local farmers, all with Holstein
Friesians (with the odd Jersey in amongst them) and all within
a five-mile radius of Trewithen. The milk is brought to the
farm daily - and the Clarkes work closely with the farmers to
manage production, supplying the grass from their own farm for
silage. This is still very much a farm business.
